━ Orthodontic FAQs

Braces & aligner questions.

What treatment involves day to day, how long it takes and what it costs at Six Ways.

Most adult cases finish in six to twelve months, with minor crowding sometimes corrected in as little as three to four months. Complex cases can take longer. You’ll be given a predicted number of aligners and a timeline in your written plan before you commit.

They are very discreet. Aligners are made from clear, thin plastic that sits closely over the teeth, although they can be noticed close up. Small tooth-coloured attachments are sometimes bonded to a few teeth to help specific movements, and these are removed at the end of treatment.

20 to 22 hours daily — effectively all the time except for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning your teeth. Wear time is the single biggest factor in finishing on schedule.

There is usually a feeling of pressure or tightness for a day or two after each new aligner or brace adjustment, which is a sign the teeth are moving. Ordinary painkillers are enough if you need them, and it eases as treatment progresses.

Aligners suit patients who want a discreet, removable option and are happy to be disciplined about wear time. Fixed braces are working 24 hours a day and can be more predictable for complex rotations, deep bites and larger movements, and are often the more economical choice. We’ll tell you honestly which is better suited to your case.

Clear aligners start from £2,500 and fixed braces from £2,800. Ask us about spreading the cost. Every case is confirmed in writing after your scan.

With aligners, yes — you take them out to eat, so nothing is off the menu, though they must go straight back in afterwards. With fixed braces we advise avoiding very hard, sticky or chewy foods that can dislodge a bracket.

Teeth naturally drift throughout life, which is why retention is part of every case. We usually provide a bonded wire behind the front teeth plus a removable retainer to wear at night indefinitely — the result is kept as long as the retainers are worn.

Yes. We treat teenagers with both aligners and fixed braces once enough adult teeth are through, and we assess the developing bite at routine check-ups so treatment can be timed well.
